Inexpensive tropical vacation ideas that are not JUST sitting on the beach!?
I am looking for vacation ideas and I am thinking either the Caribbean or Mexico. However, here are my issues: 1. I live in Kansas City MO and do not want to spend an arm and a leg to get to wherever I am going. So hopefully this destination will have enough flights going there that I have some chance to find a bargain. 2. My wife and I prefer to be pretty active on vacation and don't really enjoy just sitting around soaking up the sun (I have very pale skin and burn in the blink of an eye). Therefore we will need there to be activities beyond just hitting the beach and/or hitting the bars. 3. Because we are frugal (you might even say cheap) we do not really enjoy shopping for tourist junk, we would prefer our entertainment options not be limited to renting expensive jet-skis or paying a tour promoter through the nose for watersports. Our favorite vacation experiences in the past have been those involving epic scenery, historical attractions, good food, activities like hiking, etc. To be honest we have done more vacationing in the mountains in the past because they seem to be a better fit for us, but I am hoping to try something new. We took a cruise a couple years ago and enjoyed it. We saw Chichen Itza in Mexico, which was the high point of the trip. We had hoped to do some snorkeling during our visit to Cozumel, but the weather did not allow it. I guess I like the idea of spending a week in Mexico or the Caribbean, but worry that we might spend a lot of money for something that will not live up to our expectations. So now that you know a bit about our preferences, I am hoping someone might suggest a destination. Ideas?

Have you considered Costa Rica? There are lots of non-beach activities to be had. My brother-in-law has been there a few times and really enjoyed it.
