When do you stop looking for a sale and just buy your plane ticket?
My husband and I are coming to Vegas September 17-22. I keep checking the Southwest website and so far no sales. The rates have been the same since March. Part of me says just book now and be done with it. However I keep thinking maybe there will be a sale soon. So far the rates roundtrip are Kansas City to Las Vegas are $330 per person. Of course I keep thinking how we only paid $210 for the same dates last year. Just wondering when you give up and book the flight.

Airfare in general is significantly higher this year than last year. You might luck out and get another $210 fare but I wouldn't count on it. This is because the various airlines have all cut capacity due to the recession; last summer they were running some great sales to get people to fill up empty aircraft but this year, with fewer flights, the planes are already full. I would check other airlines to see if you can get a better price but in general, fares don't usually go down when you get closer to travel dates, they just go up. You may want to put a limit of "we'll hold out for a better fare but only as long as this fare doesn't go up by $20", knowing you have a hard limit and can minimize the extra expense but also knowing you risk the price going up.

It seems as though airfare has gone up a lot since last year as many people have said ticket prices were much lower last year. Have you looked into Allegiant Airlines or Frontier Airlines? You definitely need to buy your tickets at least 14 days before you fly out.
